FAQs

Where did BLX come from?

BLX is from the word Blactino, a friend had it on his wall with a Puerto Rican Flag. He recognized his whole self: his Blackness, and his Latin self.

What’s the X for?

In the beginning, while discussing what we wanted to create, we didn’t want to gender Latin so we added the X but understood that the Spanish language is gendered. We also realize that X can stand for the unknown and the exploration of finding oneself.

Who is BLX for?

BLX is for Black and Latin folks. We understand that Latin may rub some the wrong way, and we mean no harm. But we want to clarify that BLX is open to those in our community who grew up in a Spanish-speaking culture. (Yes we explained this concept above, but really want to make it clear). As for Black, this is in reference to African Americans, which can also encompass those who understand that the boat made several stops.

Where is BLX located?

The three founders of BLX reside in New York. We are looking to be in community with organizations that match our mission through the use of their space. We also will take advantage of the digital landscape like our Patreon or Instagram.

If BLX is about education, why exclude some, in the community?

  1. Anyone can support us through our Patreon

  2. There are spaces in the community that center heterosexuals, white, thin, able-bodied individuals. We center our programming through a Black and Brown Queer lens. We want to provide a FUBU space. For Us, By Us (see our mission).

How does one become a member of BLX?

Becoming a member is easy. Click through to our Membership/Patreon page. BLX has not been around as long as LSM or TES but like those organizations, we offer in-person events. But unlike those organizations, we have a virtual component space. We hope in this way we continue to engage our community.

My partner is not Black nor Latin, but Asian are they welcome?

Yes, with the understanding that they are a guest.

My partner is white are they welcome?

Your partner can join us at events open to the whole community. We ask that events for Black and Brown community members be respected.

What kinds of events will BLX host?

See our Membership/Patreon page for a list of member benefits.

What can people who are not your target demographic do to help BLX?

Check out our Membership/Patreon page for information on donating to our mutual aid fund. Not satisfied with our suggestion? You also have the option to choose how much you’d like to donate. Or you can go to The Effing Foundation for Sexual Freedom, our fiscal sponsor. Indicate your gift is for BLX.
