What is a leather family, and is it different from a leather house?

How does one form a leather family or house? And why would someone want to be a part of each?

For some, a leather house refers to a group of people who share a common interest in leather. But does that mean they are family? a part of a household? How are houses formed, and what purpose do they serve?

Likewise, the definition of family can mean different things.

In the queer community, houses provided safety, a place where those who were outcast from their families could find a chosen family.  Is this the same, or is this a concept that the leather community has appropriated?
