Leather is BIPOC

Leather is BIPOC. Leather is Queer. It is the wisdom of BIPOC elders who took up space, who were often the only ones in the room, and who kept showing up despite erasure, racism, violence, and being many times the only person of color in the room. In 2025, we have access to so many spaces because of their labor and resilience.

As Jill Carter says, "Each one, Teach one." Our history has often been pushed to the margins, not recorded, or passed down orally from generation to generation. When we lost a whole generation to AIDS/HIV, our stories and the wisdom of our Leather communities and elders were harder to learn. It is our duty to fulfill the promise to the past; let's remember and uncover history together.

In hopes of starting a conversation, we invite you to read our "Leather is BIPOC" resource and come ready and open to discussing the Leather legacy of BIPOC elders and communities. This resource is a beginner's guide to learning about BIPOC people in Leather. We're excited to host this open discussion for all folks of all experiences who have held this community down or are newer to their journey.

Our conversation serves as an invitation to remember not only the brilliance of those who sustained our dungeons, bars, third spaces, and conference spaces but also their organizing, community-mindedness, and accountability, which we should continue to build upon today, as long as we remember.

Come talk, reflect, learn, and remember together in our community conversation.
